Scientific Description

Aromatic chemicals are a large class of unsaturated chemical compounds characterized by one or two atoms. The properties of aromatic chemicals result from particular bonding arrangement that causes specific π (pi) electrons within a molecule to be held strongly. It is often associated with low reactivity and reflected in smaller than expected heats of combustion and hydrogenation. Benzene (C6H6) is the most important aromatic chemical and consider the parent of the other aromatic compounds. The largest group of aromatic compounds are those where one or more hydrogens of benzene are replaced by toluene (C6H5CH3) and benzoic acid (C6H6CO2H). However today its use in chemistry is restricted to compounds that have particular structural, electronic and chemical properties.
