Sodium Methylparaben

A food additive found naturally in fruits like blueberries is used by cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries for more than 50 years as an anti-fungal agent.

Sorbic Acid

A colorless naturally occurring inorganic compound firstly isolated from unripe berries with molecular formula CH3(CH)4CO2H became commercially available due to its antimicrobial properties.

Potassium Sorbate

A white salt which is soluble in water at 20°C is useful in a variety of applications such as food, wine, and personal-care products.

Ammonium Benzoate

A white solid ammonium salt of benzoic acid is used as a preservative for paper wrappers, personal care products and curing agent in the vulcanization of rubber.

Scientific Description

Preservatives comprises of different group of compounds of different molecular structure. These are organic and inorganic substances having various functional groups and even has a tendency to form ions. There are no generally applicable procedures to analyze preservatives as a class of food additives; however, the procedures are specific on how the preservatives are being examined. The lowest concentration of used preservatives is of a few milligrams per kilogram of food with few exceptions. Various recommended or salutary methods are designed for analysis to deliver a good accuracy of preservative per kilogram of food. Good manufacturers for routine analysis use a rapid analytical technique standardized official methods. The official status varies from country to country.
